A number of years ago, a vision was born in the hearts of a number of people on Lake Wateree. That vision was a church on the shores of Lake Wateree where the community could gather to worship God. People prayed and God both heard and answered their prayers.
On October 16, 1985, Jesse and Kitty Wright opened their home for a Bible study and Lake Wateree Baptist Mission was born. On March 16, 1986, the first Sunday morning worship service was held in the building of the Dutchman Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
In the fall of that year the average attendance was fifty. Talk began of purchasing land and constructing a building. A Christian businessman challenged the congregation with a matching gift offer. For every dollar that could be raised toward the purchase of land, he would match it dollar for dollar up to $30,000.00. Thirty three church members and a friendship of hundreds were able to raise $30,000.00 and in December of 1986, six acres of land was purchased for $50,000.00.
By the summer of 1987 the church had outgrown the Fire Department and began meeting on the shore of Lake Wateree. In August the first meeting was held in the new building.
On September 11, 1988 the church was officially constituted as Lake Wateree Baptist Church with 63 charter members.
